Tesla Recalls Cybertrucks With 18-Inch Steel Wheels Over Cracking Brake-Rotor Studs
NHTSA recall SB-26-33-003: Tesla is recalling 173 model-year 2024-2026 Cybertrucks fitted with 18-inch steel wheels because brake-rotor stud holes may crack and allow a stud to separate from the wheel hub. NHTSA says the defect can cause loss of vehicle control.
Tesla is recalling 173 model-year 2024-2026 Cybertruck vehicles equipped with 18-inch steel wheels because the brake-rotor stud holes may crack and allow a stud to separate from the wheel hub. NHTSA says the defect can cause loss of vehicle control. The recall is identified as NHTSA campaign SB-26-33-003.
The defect
According to the NHTSA filing, the stud holes in the affected brake rotors can develop cracks under service load. A crack that propagates through the stud hole can allow a wheel stud to separate from the hub. Separation of a wheel-attachment fastener at speed is a loss-of-control hazard — wheels can loosen, vibrate severely, or in a worst case detach.
The recall is scoped to Cybertrucks with the 18-inch steel wheel option, in production from August 2025 forward or fitted with the wheel in service afterward; vehicles with other wheel configurations are not included.
The remedy
Tesla's remedy is to replace the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts at no charge to the owner, performed at Tesla service centers. Owner notification letters are scheduled to go out in June. Owners can confirm whether their VIN is included by using the NHTSA recalls lookup.
