Washington State Workers Announce Aug. 31 Walkout as Wage Talks Stall

The Washington Federation of State Employees announced a one-day walkout for August 31 after state negotiators offered no across-the-board pay raises for the 2027–29 contract.

The federation represents more than 50,000 workers in community corrections, the Washington State Department of Transportation, and other civil service roles across the state.

"The management side has been beyond disrespectful, both in the actual offers made or even the lack of significant or realistic counterproposals," said Mike Yestramski, the WFSE president.

The Dispute

WFSE and negotiators for Gov. Bob Ferguson's administration have been in contract talks aiming to reach an agreement before an October 1 deadline for the 2027–29 biennium. The talks turned contentious when pay came up. State negotiators cited a tight budget situation in explaining why across-the-board wage increases were not being offered.

The union called the position insulting and announced the August 31 walkout in response. WFSE framed the action as a demand for the state to return to the table with a realistic proposal and to bargain in good faith.

Who Is Affected

WFSE's membership spans a wide range of state functions: highway maintenance crews, correctional officers, social service workers, licensing examiners, and others spread across dozens of state agencies. A one-day walkout would affect state services throughout Washington.

What Happens Next

The October 1 deadline gives both sides roughly two months to reach a deal before the dispute moves into a formal impasse process. The August 31 walkout, scheduled a month before that deadline, gives the union public leverage while formal bargaining continues.

WFSE did not announce a longer strike or further action if the August 31 walkout does not produce movement. The federation said it is calling on the state to bargain in good faith before that date.
